In the prolonged siege of Anandpur in 1705, Sahibzada Ajit Singh displayed his qualities of courage and steadfastness. When, at last, Anandpur was vacated on the night of 5-6 December 1704, he was given command of the rearguard. As the besiegers, violating their solemn promises for a safe conduct to the evacuees, attacked the column, he stoutly engaged them on a hill feature called Shahi Tibbi until relieved by Bhai Ude Singh. Sahibzada Ajit Singh crossed the Sarsa, then in spate, along with his father, his younger brother, Jujhar Singh, and some fifty Sikhs. Further reduced in numbers by casualties at the hands of a pursuing troop from Ropar, the column reached Chamkaur in the evening of 6 December 1705, and took up position in a garhi, a highwalled fortified haveli (house). The attackers, their numbers since swelled by reinforcements from Malerkotia, Sirhind and from among the local Ranghars and Gujjars, soon caught up with them and threw a tight ring around Chamkaur. An unequal but grim battle commenced with the sunrise on 7 December 1705 in the words of Guru Gobind Singh’s Zafarnama, a mere forty defying a hundred thousand (lakh). The besieged, after they had exhausted the meagre stock of ammunition and arrows, made sallies in batches of five each to engage the encircling host with sword and spear. Sahibzada Ajit Singh led one of the sallies and laid down his life fighting in the thick of the battle. He was 18 years old at the time of his supreme sacrifice for his faith. Gurdwara Qatalgarh now marks the spot where he fell, followed by Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, who led the next sally.

“I will tell you, whenever men become so corrupt and wicked as to relinquish the path of equity and to abandon themselves to all kinds of excesses, then the Providence never fails to raise up a scourge like me to chastise a race so depraved; When the tyrants oppress their subjects to the limit, then God sends men like me on this earth to mete out his punishment to them.” – Banda Singh Bahadur

Banda Singh Bahadur was handed the mantle of leadership from Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself. Amritsar, which had been founded by his father Guru Ram Das Ji, was becoming a great social, political and religious centre. Large throngs of devotees were drawn to this place by a longing to be with their Guru, their love of Gurbani and to witness the completion of the Harmandir Sahib.

However, even in this time of limitless possibilities, the Guru foresaw a great peril to the integrity and sanctity of the Sikh faith, both for the Sikhs of his day and the countless generations yet to be born. All about him he witnessed imposters and false Gurus distorting the sacred hymns of the first four masters. Some, such as Prithi Chand, were further confusing the sangat by composing their own poetry and attributing it to Guru Nanak. The Guru foresaw a time when Sikhs of future generations would not be able to recognize the sacred poetry of his predecessors from these false renditions.
Guru Arjan thus began the Compilation of the Guru Granth Sahib, which he called the Adi Granth – the “primal knot” which would forever secure the sanctity of the Sikh faith. The Guru sent out a call to all Sikhs far and wide to bring forth the poetry which had been composed by the four Gurus. When all the volumes had been collected, he chose a shady spot and sat down with his scribe Bhai Gurdas and carefully selected the genuine works which would be encompassed in the Holy Granth. Guru Arjan himself dictated the banis which Bhai Gurdas then wrote out in Gurmukhi script. Bhai Gurdas was often instructed by Guru Arjan to revise and correct the portion of Adi Granth that he had written during the day.

The Gurus had always desired to establish Sikhism as a casteless and universal creed. Side by side with the verses of the first four Sikh Gurus and his own, Guru Arjan Dev Ji blended the celestial utterances of other enlightened beings from many different walks of life, sects and castes: Sheikh Farid, a Muslim saint; Bhagat Kabir, a Muslim weaver; Bhagat Ravi Das, a shoe maker from Uttar Pradesh; Dhanna, a farmer from Rajastan; Namdev, a calico printer from Maharashtra; Bhikhan, a Sufi saint; Jai Dev, a poet from Bengal; Trilochan, a Brahmin from Maharashtra; Sur Das, a blind poet; Pipa, a king from Uttar Pradesh, and several more. Guru Arjan Dev’s own verses are of the highest artistic caliber. More than half of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib is made up of his writings. The Gurumukhi script made it possible for everyone to read all the selections in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib even if they were originally written in Persian or Sanskrit, Arabic, Bengali or some other language or dialect.

With the completion of this momentous work, the Guru gave the world a gift such as it had never experienced before, a source of divine living guidance so clear and penetrating that it could uplift the consciousness of a human being within no time. A gift so pure and essential, that it could transcend the boundaries of time and religion and exist beyond personality and human form.

Young Gobind Rai’s legacy began when he graciously accepted the head of his beloved father Guru Tegh Bahadur, beheaded on the orders of the fanatical emperor Aurunzab. The Guru can become our Bandhi Chhor, bringing us from darkness to light, from ignorance to wisdom because when we clasp the hem of Guru sahib, we are bestowed the strength to liberate ourselves from oppression of mind, body and soul.

Guru Hargobind sahib, returned to Amritsar on the night of Diwali and Bandhi Chhor was joyously celebrated by the entire Sikh sangat as they had been separated from their Guru for three long years. Akal Takhat higher than the Mughal throne in Delhi to assert the growing political sovereignty of the Sikh people, and accepted gifts of horses and arms to build the Sikh army. His grandson, Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji would solidify this spiritual and political union into the form of the Khalsa where Sikhs after receiving amrit, became sovereign unto themselves, dressing as kings to cast off the oppressors who sought to rule them body or mind. In the times that followed, tyrant after tyrant has unleashed destruction upon the Akal Takhat and Harimandir sahib because they are the most visible Akal Takhat always flies two Nishaans (Sikh flags) to emphasise this central doctrine. The natural insistence for self determination by Sikhs through Akal Takhat sahib has created the necessity for Sikhs to stand in defiance of invaders and tyrants from the time of Ahmed Shah Abdali to the modern day. Cohorts of Sikh martyrs from Bhai Mani Singh and Baba Deep Singh onwards have given their heads for the defence of the Akal Takhat and the Guru's insistence upon self governance on all matters concerning the Sikh quam. The Akal Takhat stands to remind Sikhs of their duty to not only light. The painting reflects this idea, illustrating the perpetual cycle of life, death and rebirth which we are trapped in. Freedom comes when we embrace the Guru's message because only through our Guru's grace can we disrupt this continuity and merge with the one divine light. Within the folds of Guru Har Krishan’s robe, the painting shows the image of Guru Granth Sahib, emphasizing that the Guru Granth Sahib - The Abode of Nanak

The Abode of Nanak is a reflection on our daily relationship with the spirit of the Sikh Gurus as distilled into the Siri Guru Granth, which Sikhs regard as their living Guru. Siri Guru Granth Sahib is an anthology not only of the sacred compositions of the Gurus (Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Guru Gobind Singh), but also of enlightened Bhagats (saints) and Bhatts (bards). The inclusion of compositions by poets of different faiths, without distinguishing between them by label, is a hallmark of its spiritual uniqueness. The composers came from a variety of class and creedal backgrounds, from Muslim to Hindu and from upper caste to low caste. The lack of discrimination in the scripture is born of the progressive ideology laid down by Guru Nanak and upheld by all nine subsequent Sikh Gurus. When we bow before the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, we also bow before all ten Nanaks and the legacy they gifted to us.

The Siri Guru Granth Sahib is the embodiment of the spiritual revolution which was first ignited by Guru Nanak dev ji and the life breath of eight more Nanaks nurtured and fed this flame. Then in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, transformed that flame into a wildfire of spiritual liberation through the creation of the Khalsa panth. In 1708, Guru Gobind Singh, having consciously witnessed the sacrifice of the lives of all his four sons, handed over the legacy to the Guruship of the Shabad Guru, embodied in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. He understood that the age of lineage was over, and so he consciously left no heirs. The unique beauty of this is that the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, our present Guru, can neither be altered nor changed in any way. It is a touchstone for all humanity that exists beyond the limitations of time and space, now and in the future.

We look to Siri Guru Granth Sahib as our guide to connect with the One internally, see the One in all and fight inequality and injustice in every sphere of our lives as the Gurus themselves did. His name was Daya Ram, a devoted Sikh from Lahore. He alone stood tall amongst a crowd of a hundred thousand. Mata Sahib beckoned him onto the mud built stage and the Guru took him into the tent to perform the sacrifice, away from the eyes of the congregation. Time passed. Under the oppressive mughal occupation of 17th century India, the Sikhs alone remained as a wellspring of freedom and equality. To maintain their freedom and to fulfill their destiny, Guru Gobind Singh knew that the farmers and merchants of Punjab needed to be forged into strong and fearless warriors. In the spring of 1699, Guru Gobind Singh sent a hukamnama to his Sikhs, penned by his own hand, instructing them to come to Anandpur Sahib for the Baisakhi spring celebration. More than eighty thousand people arrived at Anandpur Sahib, cherishing the Guru’s personal invitation. Guru Gobind Singh strode out alone from the folds of a tent. He was powerful in his appearance, dressed in beautiful clothes with a mighty sword hanging at his waist. The fire of battle, Bir Ras, charged his every movement. Unsheathing his sword and raising it to the sky, he called out “My sword is thirsty. I want the head of a Sikh!” Nothing could be heard over the vast crowd but the clanging of the horses as they shifted nervously on the side. Leaning forward and searching face to face the Guru boomed in an unforgiving voice. “I need a head! Who is willing to satisfy the calling of my sword! I need one person who will give his life to me!” The Sikhs stood shocked and could not believe what was unfolding before them. But Daya Ram, a shopkeeper from Lahore, moved purposely to the stage. Guru Gobind Singh took him by the arm, and with a fierce glance over his shoulder, he led him into the tent. Moments later, the Guru strode back before the crowd, his sword red with blood. Once again he bellowed, “I need a head! I need the head of a Sikh!”

Those in the front rows look at each other and whispered frantically, pushing with their backs into the crowd. Some thought the Guru had gone mad, and they ran away in fear for their lives. Some hastened to the Guru’s mother, begging her to intercede on their behalf. One by one, four more Sikhs – Dharm Das, Mokhan Chand, Sahib Chand and Himmat Rai –came forward to offer their lives to Guru Gobind Singh. Each time the Guru returned alone, asking for the head of another Sikh! After the fifth Sikh disappeared into the tent, a hushed silence fell over the crowd who waited with emotional anticipation. This time, the Guru took a little longer in returning from the tent and when he emerged, he walked slowly and calmly with a bearing of mastery. Behind him walked Panj Piare, the five beloved ones, dressed in beautiful clothes of gold threads and resplendent turbans. Their faces glowed, radiating the light of the Guru himself. With all faces turned towards him, the Guru then spoke to the crowd. “These five beloved Sikhs are the Khalsa. Through the supreme test of faith, even at the risk of their life, they have become pure. You who are present here, and you who come in all the ages to follow, I call you to join the brotherhood of the Khalsa. Through the purity of the Khalsa, the world shall be free and the grip of the tyrants shall be broken.” The crowd rose to their feet in cries of joy and victory. Taking a bowl of iron filled with pure water, the Guru knelt and stirred the water with a double-edge sword. Mata Jeeto ji, Guru Gobind Singh’s wife, came forward with cakes of sugar wrapped in her chuni. Mataji put the sugar into the water, adding sweetness to the power of the steel. By adding the sugar to the water, the Guru showed to his Sikhs that strength must always be accompanied by depth and sensitivity. The five beloved ones drank this Amrit from the Guru’s hands, uttering the new greeting of the Khalsa brotherhood, Waheguru ji ka Khalsa! Waheguru ji ki fateh! “The Khalsa belongs to God, Victory belongs to God”. Then, to the amazement of the crowd, the Guru himself knelt before the five Piare and asked them to initiate him also into the Khalsa.

In a brilliant move of strategy and leadership, Guru Gobind Singh transformed the Sikhs into the fearless and united body of the Khalsa. The Khalsa became a brave and moral fighting force against the tyrannical mughal rulers that occupied the Punjab. They achieved an exalted state of deathlessness, which empowered even a handful of Khalsa to fight effectively against overwhelming numbers. As they ran out of ammunition and arrows, Sikhs inside split themselves into batches of five each who would go out one after the other to engage the besiegers in hand to hand combat.Watching his brother Baba Ajit Singh attain Shaheedi, Baba Jujhar Singh desired to fight in the battlefield, as well, even though doing so meant certain death. He asked his father, “Guru Sahib, permit me, dear father, to go where my brother has gone. Don’t say that I am too young. I am your son. I am a Singh, a Lion, of yours. I shall prove worthy of you. I shall die fighting, with my face towards the enemy, with the Naam on my lips and the Guru in my heart.” Guru Gobind Singh embraced him and said, “Go my son and wed the life-giving bride, Death. May the Almighty be with you always.” Guru Sahib gave blessings to Baba Jujhar Singh just like a father gives blessings to the bride on the day of her marriage. Guru added, “I asked my father to give his life for “dharam” (righteousness and justice). Today, what I told my father, I now tell you son.”Baba Jujhar Singh led the last sally towards the end of the day (7 December 1705), and laid down his life fighting near the place where he had earlier seen his elder brother fall. He was just 14 years old when he gave his life for the Sikh faith. Bhai Himmat Singh and Bhai Sahib Singh (two of the original Panj Piarey) along with 3 other Singhs followed Sahibzada Baba Jujhar Singh into battle. The Mughals were shocked at what they saw. He belonged to the order of Akali Nihungs whose origins are ascribed to Guru Gobind Singh in the aftermath of his severest battles with the Mughal Empire. The account is reminiscent of the establishment of the Khalsa in 1699. While halted at Damdama in Bhatinda district of southern Punjab in 1706, a Sikh lamented to the Guru that there were no more true Sikhs left as they all now worshipped power alone. The Guru set out to disprove this notion by asking those Singhs present for five heads to be ‘fed’ to the tutelary goddess of war, Chandi (i.e. to let themselves be decapitated by the Guru’s sword). Five Singhs promptly offered themselves and were duly honoured with the honorific of ‘shaheed’ for their willingness to be sacrificed. Among the five was a warrior named Deep Singh (1682-1757).*

Today Baba Deep Singh is remembered by Sikhs as a noted warrior and scholar who pledged to wrest Amritsar from the hands of an Afghan garrison in 1757. The Afgans, under the conqueror Ahmad Shah Durani had invaded India numerous times to plunder the massive wealth of its cities and take captive men, women and children in the tens of thousands to be sold as slaves in Kabul. However, on their return journey through the Punjab, the Sikhs would attack and harass the invading army, take back the wealth and free scores of captives. Akali Nihungs were often at the forefront of these attacks and these warriors of the ‘shaheed’ or martyr battalions were always the first to enter the battlefield but the last to leave it. The Afgans took revenge on the Sikhs by attacking their spiritual heart, the Harimandir Sahib. They destroyed Harimandir Sahib with a barrage of artillery and as a final act of contempt, filled the holy tank with blood and animal carcasses.

The news of the desecration of the Sikh’s holiest place soon reached Baba Deep Singh Ji who, at age 75 years old, emerged from scholastic retirement and declared to the congregation at Damdama Sahib that he intended to expel the Afghan garrison besieging the temple and rebuild it. He took a vow before the assembled sangat not to come back alive without fulfilling this mission and performed Ardas, promising to reach to Sri Harimander Sahib: “Sir jaave ta jaave, mera Sikhi sidhak na jaave” (If my head is severed, let it be, but don’t severe my Sikh way of life)”. In defiance of the Afgans, he announced that the coming Diwali festival would be celebrated at Amritsar. Five hundred men came forward to go with him and as he went from village to village, many more Sikhs joined him. By the time they reached Tarn Taaran, their numbers had swelled to several thousand. Then Baba Ji drew a line on the ground with his khanda, and beseeched only those who were willing to fight and die to cross it. All the assembled Sikhs crossed this line eagerly. Baba Deep Singh Ji then recited the Shabad: “Jo to praym khaylan ka chaao, sir dhar tale galee mayree aao.” (Those who wish to play the game of love, come to me with your head in your palm). “It maarag pair dhareejai, sir deejai kaan na keejai.” (If you wish your feet to travel this path, don’t delay in accepting to give your head). His companions were eager to win martyrdom in this sacred cause so they bathed in the pool at Tarn Taaran and offered prayers. They put on the dress of bridegrooms, tied festal ribbons called ganas on their wrists and sprinkled saffron on their robes. Thus dressed, they marched forth to wed Princess Death.

When news of Baba Deep Singh Ji’s intentions reached the Afgan General, he immediately mobilized an army of 20,000 men and proceeded towards Tarn Taran. Baba Deep Singh Ji and the Sikh shaheedi army intercepted the Afghan forces near the village of Gohalwar, about five miles from Amritsar. At this point, there was a bloody clash between both sides. Baba Deep Singh Ji fought with his 18-ser khanda (weighing about 32 lbs). Each Sikh fought with such great valor and courage that the enemy was near defeat. However, in the midst of the battle, a large contingent of reinforcements arrived for the Afgan side, turning the odds against the Sikhs. Despite this, the Sikhs lead by Baba Deep Singh Ji, continued fighting tirelessly and advancing towards Amritsar. During the pitched battle, Baba Deep Singh ji received a mortal wound to his neck that would have severed the head of an ordinary man. Upon seeing this scene, a young Sikh warrior called out to Baba Ji, reminding him of his vow to reach Sri Harimandir Sahib. Baba Deep Singh Ji stood back up, supported his head on his left palm and, holding his khanda upright in his right hand, continued fighting and moving towards Sri Harimandir Sahib. Upon seeing the sight of Baba Deep Singh, most of the men in the Afgan army lost heart and began to flee. Baba Deep Singh Ji was able to continue fighting and reached Sri Harimander Sahib, where he bowed his head at the prakarma and died a martyr. Baba Deep Singh Ji’s shaheedi inspired the Sikhs to continue to fight against oppression for many years and even today, his life serves as an example for all Sikhs on how to live and die with dignity. He acknowledged neither bodily comfort nor pain, living and dying as a true martyr. In the true Akali Nihung spirit of old, Baba Deep Singh was a tenaciously chaste man of divine contemplation and penance, and was given to charity. Though a true warrior, he remained absorbed in deep contemplation. Where there was battle to be fought, he was not held back for fear of death. Where the Khalsa community faced its greatest danger, he placed his body at the very front. Wherever the battle was, he was to be found in its vanguard, with standard in hand, beating the war drum, he was always the first to engage the enemy.*

*source – Warrior Saints – Four Centuries of Military History Vol.1 by Amandeep Singh Madra & Parmjit Singh

In 1708, Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, having consciously witnessed the sacrifice of the lives of all his four sons, handed over the legacy of the Guruship to the Shabad Guru, embodied in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. The Nihang order is today mostly ceremonial, but in times of war, the Akalis have historically spear-headed the attack on enemies of the Sikh religion.

The order of the Nihangs, a fiercely independent vangaurd of the Khalsa army is said to date back to the time of Guru Arjan and the formation of the Akal Sena. A champion of gender equity, Guru Amar Das Sahib appointed women alongside men in these administrative positions.

The Harimandir Sahib is the heart of the Sikh Panth. Looking at this art piece, we dwell upon the last days of Guru ji on this earth as he planted the core tenants of Sikhism in the hearts of a community of the faithful who gathered about him. He casts a royal blue shadow, which takes the shape of a warrior wearing a Dastaar and Kalgi. This foreshadows the transformation of their jyot into Guru Gobind Singh ji who would create the Khalsa panth, born out of the soil of Punjab from the seeds Guru Nanak planted generations before.

To the left of Guru Nanak, we see the field of golden wheat but to the right it subtly transforms into a landscape of arrows and fire. His people came and worked with him in the fields. The Guru took keen delight in sowing wheat, and reaping the golden harvests: he was of the people. Once again his stores were open to them. The bread and water were ready for all at all hours of the day, and crowds came and freely partook of the guru’s gifts. All comers were filled from the Guru’s treasury of thought and love and power; the diseased and distressed were healed by him. He was an old man then; and he loved to see the crowds of God’s disciples coming from the distant Kabul and Central Asia and Assam and Southern India - all the places where he had been in his younger days. In the trackless world of that time, the old Father of his people travelled on foot, singing his Hymns of Nam, and gathering every trace of love. The Afghan and the Biloch, the Turk and the Tartar, the Sufi and the Brahman, the white and dark races, mingled in his great heart. The disciples, both men and women, came from all directions, and took part freely in the song of the Guru. So great was the reverence of his own country for him, that Pir Bahauddin, the great Sufi teacher who counted his followers by thousands, one morning suddenly turned his back on Qaaba (which no Moslem would do), and began bowing, in his Namaz, in the direction of Kartarpur, “Why so?” cried his faithful followers, in alarm. “This morning I see the light of God in this direction, my friends!” said he.

Guru Ram Das Sahib the fourth in the line of Guru Nanak came from humble beginnings. The colours of the painting reflect this transition of moving from the ordinary world depicted in the pale greys at the top of the painting and sinking into a deeper reality of consciousness visualized through a rich palette of golds and greens. These reflect the inner reality of Waheguru into which Guru Nanak merged. Guru Sahib’s eyes show a deep inward gaze which finally recognize both the creator and creation as one and his hand shows a single extended figure which reflects this recognition of Ik Onkar.
